HOW TO CARE FOR PEARLS
If you own pearls, or if you are considering purchasing pearls, you want to make sure that you care for them properly so that you can enjoy them for many years. Pearls are delicate organic gems that can be easily damaged. They range in hardness (hardness refers to the resistance to scratching) from 2.5-4.5, or we could say they are about as hard as fingernails. Care needs to be taken so that they don’t bump or hit surfaces that can scratch or crack them.
Pearls are damaged by all kinds of acids and other every day chemicals. Keep them away from perfume, hair spray, cosmetics, alcohol, bleach, ammonia, and chlorinated swimming pool water. Even acidic perspiration can damage pearls! A good general rule is to always put your pearls on after applying makeup and getting dressed.
After wearing, wipe your pearls with a soft cloth. To store your pearls, put them in soft cloth bag to keep them from rubbing against harder jewelry.
